Jannes Kleiker was born in the City of Groningen in 1957. It was in that City too that he received his professional education at the Fine Arts Academy Minerva from 1978 until 1984. The artist is a figurative painter, whose work is often to be characterized as realistic. He works with oil paint on panels, using as backgrounds white or boldly coloured sienna. Upon this foundation he sketches with brush and burned umbra. Then follows in more layers, which may be half covering and half transparent, the play of colours and clair-obscure. Compositions are for Kleiker always extremely important. He likes long and narrow sizes. The intricate images of Jannes Kleiker show attention for compositions with their light-dark relations as well as soft colour schemes. Usually he paints female nudes in modest poses. An entity positioned in a romantic setting of an interior, or outside, invokes in subtle ways a poetic intimacy.
His works are in particular renowned such as, the Cave -cycle, the Heveskes- cycle and the Algarve- cycle, with splashing sunlight on the subjects. His new Sorrow & Consolation- cycle shows once more an admirable example of his great talents.
