René Tweehuysen was born in Utrecht in 1957. He received his professional education at the Academy for Plastic Arts ARTIBUS in the same city. In 1999 he decided to flee from the so-called ‘wild west’ and found a place where there was still to be found the necessary space, calm and freedom in the most Northern part of Friesland (het Bildt). René Tweehuysen is known as an experienced portrait painter. In the course of time his painters’ hand has become more and more easy and loose. “Animation” is the quintessence of what he cares for. He shows man as a fragile being closed up in itself, in his recent portraits. The intensive background colours in his portraits play an important role. By a specific process of maturing, originated by painting layer over layer in varying covering and transparent colours, he creates an interesting paintings skin, so to say. Next to portrait painting he varies his oeuvre with landscape painting. Dikes, salt marshes, ditches, fields, roads, villages in het Bildt and the sandbars standing clear of water, they all offer a relief and interplays of lines, that Tweehuysen adores to paint.
In this kind of “Land-Art” landscapes, there are no people visible. The beauty of the light and the often dramatic formation of clouds determine the atmosphere of those landscapes to a large extent.
