Douwe Elias (Leeuwarden, 1952) was educated from 1974 until 1979 at the Arts Academy Minerva in the city of Groningen.
Douwe Elias Kamstra has a rather shy character and is in no way an easy going person. He does not feel much at home in new situations.
However, Douwe Elias, as a painter is quite determined, very liberated and definitely selfconfident.
Large canvases with masterly church interiors as well as heavily clouded skies over the Frisian grounds, are repeating elements of his oeuvre.
Extremely catching are his portraits of children who are mentally disabled.
When he was young he met with these children, since his father was a teacher at the school connected with a special boarding centre for the for the deprived kids.
Themes and designs take a long time to mature, in order to be worked out swiftly and at the right moments.
Elias paints with broad touches in a characteristic, soft and flowing technique.
The painter evokes a tender melancholy and mild confusion in his work.
