Flip Gaasendam (1957 Groningen)
Flip Gaasendam was educated at the Art Academy Minerva in Groningen.
He is a real native of Groningen and never denies that.
He finds his subjects usually close at home in the town or in the Province.
Gaasendam's story usually begins with chaos, that is often swathed in a tinge of green and blue shades. In this he creates order and especially the light determines space and composition.
" As I am originally a water-colorist, I have learned to paint in a trans-parant way. I make use of that in my oil-paintings.
My work is classified as post-impressionistic.
As a painter I forget everything about art-history. There is a lot I find beautiful, from Alma Tadema to Andrew Wyeth, but I am a present day painter.
I would be saying to much, in my opinion, that I consciuously go back to the past. I work in an unorthodox way. I do not apply the paint in a fixed way. I smear with pieces of cloth, I use the paletknife and my hands, etc. The fact that my palet is dominated by green is because I make a painting light by using cobalt or ocre.
My themes are nostalgic and romantic.
As a child I liked the mist at dawn and the same holds for the illumination in the dining-hall of the railway-station restaurant of Groningen or Amsterdam".
