Joost Doornik

Joost Doornik

Doornik had his education at the Fine Arts Academy Minerva in the City of Groningen
from 1983 until 1989.
His teachers were Mathijs Röling, Diederik Kraaipoel and Rikus van der Meer. To Italy and France. He went on tour, painting.

Some people do have the good luck of an early vocation. Joost Doornik discovered in his early years that with a pencil and paper one can suggest a sort of " for all the world like a real thing". A new world opened up for him. At a very early stage he knew that he would become an artist and in particular a painter.

During his training at the Arts Academy he always has worked by keenly observing subjects and objects, under the expert guidance of amongst others Diederik Kraaipoel and Mathijs Röling. The choice of his subject was never far from home; on location he painted townscapes and interiors.
After having finished his education at the Academy Joost did not develop himself as a lonely studio painter. Instead, he prefers to stir from his house, out into the city or the country side. Also his travels are leading him to France and Italy. Joost is a man who likes to formulate tasks for himself. Nearly all his paintings are created on location. As such they coerce him to make quick choices. His subjects are sometimes rather intricate: e.g. heavily thronged café interiors or a panorama revealing Rome at sunset.

When he works in the open air, the changing light urges him to speed up; at most one can paint only a couple of hours all together. The use of paintbrushes for the creation of this kind of images can be characterized as easy and effective; sometimes agitated. The paint touches are clearly visible here and there.

In his own method of working he seems to be affected by a touch of French Impressionism, though besides he maintains his level-headed view on reality.
He intensively observes places where people are staying, such as pubs or railway station halls. Though no any person attracts central attention. That is in particular reserved for what they are being busy with, for the setting in which they are existing, for the light that falls from outside into the location in which they are acting in one way or the other.
